One Jew Vs. ENTIRE College Encampment | You Are My Cousin, Not My Enemy

I am currently at GW University in Washington DC, surrounded by encampments protesting against Israel. These protesters have been taught that supporting the Palestinian people means being against Israel. I aim to engage in conversations with them, to truly hear and understand their perspectives.

One individual I spoke with challenged my identity as a Jew, suggesting that Judaism is solely a religion and not tied to a specific land. We delved into the complexities of Jewish ancestry and the ties to the land of Israel. I emphasized the importance of recognizing diverse identities and histories within the Jewish community.

The discussion also touched on the concept of Zionism and its ethical implications. While the term may evoke different meanings for different people, I emphasized that Zionism, to me, is about the right of Jewish people to self-determination, not the exclusion of others. We explored the impact of historical events and external influences on shaping perceptions and fueling conflicts.

The conversation led us to shared aspirations for a future where Israelis and Palestinians coexist peacefully in the region. We discussed the need to move beyond entrenched animosities and work towards a future where all individuals have equal rights and freedoms in the land. I highlighted the importance of personal connections and understanding in fostering reconciliation and building a better future.

I also shared a personal account of witnessing violence in the region and expressed my commitment to advocating for peace and justice for all. I emphasized the need for mutual respect, empathy, and open dialogue to bridge divides and address the root causes of conflict. By engaging with each other as equals and recognizing our shared humanity, we can work towards a future of coexistence and harmony.

Ultimately, the exchange concluded with a moment of understanding and reconciliation, symbolized by a hug shared with a Palestinian counterpart. It underscored the power of dialogue, empathy, and collaboration in paving the way for a brighter future for all inhabitants of the region. Together, by shedding light on misconceptions, challenging biases, and fostering mutual respect, we can strive towards a future of peace, unity, and shared prosperity in the land we all call home.
