Each year, approximately 700 lone soldiers, who are in Israel without their families, step up to volunteer for military service. Stationed in the border areas near Gaza, our duty is to respond swiftly to any emergencies that arise. I’m currently serving in Gaza, where the situation can change in an instant. It’s a responsibility I couldn’t ignore as a Jew. Seeing the influx of people returning to Israel compelled me to take action. I couldn’t simply watch from the sidelines; I had to contribute.
Transitioning to civilian life after three or four years of service poses a unique set of challenges for these young men and women. Unlike their Israeli counterparts, they lack the support of family during this pivotal time. That’s where organizations like Keren Hayesod step in. As a lone soldier myself, I’ve experienced firsthand the invaluable support provided by such organizations. They become our surrogate family in Israel, offering assistance with various needs, from basic essentials to emotional support.
The Wings program, initiated in 2005, aims to ease the transition for lone soldiers, guiding them from military service to civilian life. Through financial assistance and mentorship programs like the Big Brother initiative, lone soldiers are equipped with the tools to integrate successfully into Israeli society. Grants are provided to cover essential expenses, ensuring these soldiers can focus on building their futures.
Since its inception, the Lone Soldiers program has supported over 5,000 individuals, facilitating their integration into Israeli society. Whether it’s through financial aid, mentorship, or emotional support, these programs play a vital role in helping lone soldiers navigate the complexities of civilian life post-service.
It’s a testament to the solidarity and commitment of the global Jewish community that these lone soldiers find support and encouragement as they embark on their journey towards becoming fully-fledged citizens of Israel. Their sacrifices and dedication deserve recognition and support as they continue to serve their country and contribute to its growth and prosperity.
